The Battle

One of the most-watched videos on YouTube shows the struggle of a water buffalo family and herd to save a child. It’s called the Battle at Kruger Park.

It begins with a buffalo mother, father, and child meandering peacefully ahead of the herd, unaware that a pride of six lions are stealthily easing up to attack them. Sensing the danger too late, the water buffalo parents and calf immediately turn and run away. The child cannot keep up and a battle ensues.

Watch the video and then respond to the prompts in a blog comment.  It should be posted by 8 PM on Sunday.

1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo?

2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?

3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs.

4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent?  the lions?  the crocodile?

  1. 1. I think I would be one of the buffalo only because they run in such big packs and are all very protective over each other. With the buffalo you attack one of them you get the whole pack turned against you as we saw in the video. Animals all run in packs or groups in the wild and try to protect each other. I think the zoo and the National Park both have benefits. For the benefits in the National Park you have a pack with you like a family and can run free and wild without containment. As the benefits for the zoo you are guaranteed protection and meals daily. Both places would have benefits and downfalls but overall I think the wild would be better with your pack.

    2. This video could be used as a very good lesson in leadership and survival video. We see the leadership with both packs of animals as in the lion the leader went out and took the buffalo down with the rest following. In the group of buffalo we see them coming back as one large group and the leader would have to be the initial animal running the lions off. They both have leadership roles in the pack. As in leadership there has to be someone to take the lead and not be afraid of what the consequences may be. In a lesson in survival you have to know protection and what it takes to get through safe and productivly as both of these packs did.

    3. I would describe this video as a real scene of nature. This video was an amazing clash between three strong groups of animals. The first group being the lions. They were a hungry group looking for a tasty meal of the wild. The lions would go to serious extremes to get what they had imagined and easy quick meal. As they took off in a full blown run they easily took down their prey. It was effortless to them as I am sure they had done it many more times before.
What they easily brought done happen to be a child of a great animal being the buffalo. The parents of the young scaredly ran away until they brought a stampede of their pack back. When they were off getting the pack a hungry alligator alongside the bank had tried to steal the buffalo away. It faught fearcly with the lions over the young trying to capture it in to the water. It eventually gave up and swam back into the water,
After the pack came back they singly got rid of the lions. The first took off with the buffalo trying to ram it with its big horns. They peeled off quickly after that. As they would run off they were individually chased by a buffalo. The young jumped up and ran back to the middle of the pack where they would protect it. The animals all learned a lesson and will have more encounters like this later when they try it again for a savory meal.

    4. This video could be used to display several aspects of the human race. I would describe it as the buffalo being a victim so maybe the middle class having to deal with the attack and almost losing someone. The lions as the upper class trying to overtake and there being fewer in the group. They were going after the middle and trying to intimidate. The crocodile would have to be someone living off the government or a thief. He is letting someone else do all the work and then he is trying to steal it from the others. This is how I would classify this video into the groups of the human race.

  2. 1. If i had to pick i would be a lion. The lion is king of the jungle and no one wants to mess with him. Even though the water buffalo scared the lions, the lions was out numbered.

    2. This video shows how the buffalo came together and was able to save the baby buffalo from the lions and the alligator. It shows that if everyone stays together you have a better chance of winning.

    3. This video is mainly about how the water buffalo stay together and try to go past the lions. The lions end up getting a baby buffalo. The water buffalo then herd up and start going towards the lions and crocodile that was fighting over this baby water buffalo. The lions hold their ground for a while.
One buffalo then takes charge and scopes up a lion with his horn. The lions separate but some still hold their ground. The Water buffalo isn't giving up. The buffalo hold their ground together and separate the lions 1 by 1.
The baby buffalo was fine after he had been in the middle of the lions and crocodiles tug of war. It just shows that if you all stick together as a team. The outcome will be a lot more successful than if just 1 buffalo was doing it by himself.

    4. Black people are the water buffalo. They always get picked on. They group up in gangs and come after the cops. The cops are the lions. They are trying to take down all the crime rates starting with the blacks( buffalo). The crocodile is the white folks. White folks are always trying to get their nose in the middle of it all they always end up losing.

If i would be one of those animals, i would be the buffalo. because i want to be the winner. Don’t want to be the one that to gained up to kill some other animals baby and small weak. Im sure the lion protected their owns, they do have feelings. I understand thats how they survive, i guess they just have to fight to win it. I would rather be an animal living in a national park because you have the freedom and animals belongs to the nature.

    2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?
For showing that the unexpected can happen or that just because you are a top predator, doesn't mean you will win each battle or not giving up when the odds are not in your favor or the power in numbers. I bet the those Lion learned their lesson that they won't miss the Buffaloes any more unless their extremely hungry.

    3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs.
This is the Battle at Kruger national park video, and, just eight minutes clip with over 73.7m views on YouTube, it's certainly the most famous. Professional camera crews would kill to have witnessed a scene such as like this one. In which a herd of buffalo, a pride of lions, and some crocodiles go head to head.
A herd of buffalo slowly graze unknowingly into the sites of crouching lions. Suddenly, the lead buffalo freezes, aware of danger, and quickly spins around back out. The pride of lions unleash a three attack against the buffalo and a young baby calf is tackled, plunging both lion and buffalo calf into the water.
Just when it looks as though the lions will easily eat the calf, a crocodile become active from the water and sinks his teeth into their kill, pitting predator against predator in a grisly tug of war. The lions tear the calf away, nearly ensuring defeat until a powerful unforgiving buffalo herd bring together for a final showdown to reclaim its own to take the baby Buffalo back.

    4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent? the lions? the crocodile?
In my view as a metaphor for the human race. I think the Lions would be represents the president Obama, the Crocodile represent health care insurance and the Buffalo represents the people of America. Thats how i view this Battle at Kruger Park youtube video as a metaphor for human race.

  4. 1. I would rather be the lion because you are the predator and no the prey. I would probably rather live in the National Park because there is more room to run around and stuff like that.
    2. It shows leadership because one lion leads the other lions to attack the water buffalo. It also shows another example by showing the water buffalo scaring away the lions.
    3. The water buffalo is getting drink of water just minding its own bussines. a group of lions see it and their stomachs growl. They are obviously hungry. So the leader of the pack goes and tries to take down the buffalo. The others follow and help. They chased it and took it down in the water. It took all of them to pull it out but they got the job done. Then while they were having lunch a huge group of water buffalo came. They were not scared because the lions already had more than enough food. So while the lions ate the water buffalos thought up a plan to get rid of the lions. so one was trying to scare the lions off but it wasn't working. but then all of them got in it too and then the lions left them alone.
    4. The human race is very violent and likes to kill things especially if we are hungry.

  5. I would be a lion because they are fast and can get away fast. I would leave in the zoo because they feed you and it wouldnt have to be in a danger side and people come and see you I
really don't care because I am a human and I in a good place.

I think this video show me that everyone should work together and help each other with what they are going throu and give support. A good example that happened right know is Wyatt and his family we should pray for them help them and support them and love them like family no matter what happens.

In this video there is this a Buffalo family and there is lions watching them so the lions tryed to attack the baby Buffalo which they got him but his parents went to the other Buffalos and got help so the buffalos scared them away one by one and lucky for the baby buffalo and his family got help from the other Buffalo's.
If it wasn't for the baby Buffalo parents he wouldn't be alive also if the lions won't get himout of the water he would be died because the crocodile would of eatin him up but the lions want the buffalo so they worked together and out him out of the water but for the buffalo he didn't give up on fighting for his life.
I think that the Buffalo's and other animals out in the world stick together like a family and help each out out on saving others when they are in troubles.

This video would go to my family because what happened last year with my family. The buffalo would be my sister and the lions would be our family and the crocodile would be the guy that wanted her and he wanted her not to see her and the baby but the crocodile lost and the lions won over him but our prayers won the battle I would have to say so which I am glad it did also I am glad that the Buffalo family won the battle too.

  6. 1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo? i would like to be a snake. I hate snakes i still think it would be fun just to see what its like. i would be an animal i the zoo so that way i would be protected from being killed.

    2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival? it shows that the male takes the lead and the women stays behind with the baby. when you are pinned down you need to keep fighting and you will get out alive.

    3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs.
Its a wide open space that has no chain fences to keep the animals safe from one another. But, the animals at least have a wide open space to run in and gaze in but when you put animals together that could kill one another then you are just asking for trouble.
    4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent? the lions? the crocodile? Well the water buffalo would repent the majority. The lions would repent the race that is trying to fit in and be like everybody else. The crocodile would be the one that buts into everything to feel like they are apart of something.

  7. 1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo?
If I was a lion I would want to live in the zoo. Mostly because lions sleep 20 somes hours a day. This way I can sleep get feed then sleep some more. The down part to this is that I may get bored with my four hours of non sleep. Beside the zoo keepers should keep me entertain so I would be ok.

    2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?
To live in this world we all need to sick together. The lions have a pride to hunt and against the crocodile they work together to win their meal. Unlucky for them that the water buffalos had more in their herd to get the calf.
    3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraph.
In the beginning of the video it shows lions laying next to the river bank in tall grass. They spot a group of water buffalos, seeing the opportunity they stalk the group targeting a small calf. The water buffalos run to get away from the pride. Sadly a calf ways not fast enough.
One of the lions tackle the calf in the river. The pride swam the calf now three trying to make the killing blow to the calf. Out of no where two eye come flowing to the town of the river. It was a crocodile that took the advantage of the lions being in the water with the calf. It chops down on the calf hoping to win this tug of war battle for it's next meal. The lions put number the crocodile and drags the calf on the river bank. The crocodile accepted defeat and disappear back under water.
The lions were not the only ones with numbers. The herd of water buffalos came back but five times the size they had before. Maybe 30 water buffalos swam the lions still not wanting to make the first move till one brave water buffalo charges the lions and throw on in the air. One lions runs with a buffalo behind him. This give the herd the courage they needed to force the pride to run away. Lucky the calf that was inches away from death fought his way up and run to safely in it's herd. The video ends with the lions running behide a hill with the herd following them.
    4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent?  the lions?  the crocodile?
I really have no idea what the animals represent so I guess I'll just take a stab at it. The water buffalo could be you or a person being tear down by the other people (lions). Then the crocodile could be a person that is bringing you down and only hurts you. With both of the people tearing you down and the person that hurts you. You become hopeless and depress till your herd comes and protects you and fight for you. Then you fight your way back to the people that love you.

  8. 1. I would rather be the buffalo than the lion because the Buffalo as a pack stayed together and never gave even after they almost lost one of their own. I would much much rather be living in the National Park like Kruger then in a Zoo because though you would have to fight for life and stuff you would still be out in the open and not in an cage.
    2. Its a lesson on leadership because the buffalo took leadership into getting their calf back and for survival it shows that in order to survive you have to stay together as one.
    3. This video is about a group of buffalo who are just trying to travel the open land. As the first 3 buffalo come across some lions they try and turn around and get away but the pride of lions capture the calf. The lions try and try to take down the calf nut are not successful. They try and attack it from all sides but the calf never gives up.
The lions manage to get the calf up on the land and are trying to feast on it. As what it seems like the calf is about to give up, the herd of buffalo show back up to try and defend the calf ad get it back. The herd attacks the pride of lions and chase them away leaving 2 lions there to protect the calf.
As the pride of lions start to fade away, the calf figures out a way to get lose of the lions paws and goes back to the herd of buffalo. The herd still though slowly and slowly gets rid of the herd of lions and they final chase them all off.
    4. The video can be viewed as a metaphor of the human race because it shows like one group of people fighting for what they want but then another fighting against them and then that one group that just keeps butting in everywhere.

  9. 1. In this situation only I would want to be the buffalo because they had a pack. they all fought together to get a young one back. I would rather live in a national park because I would have more freedom.

    2. This video is a lesson in leadership because if you lead someone will follow you and you can make something of yourself and do something great.

    3. In this video there is a dad, mom, and baby buffalo walking around minding their own business. up ahead of them are lions bedding down ready to attack. The buffalo do not see the lions until it is too late. The buffalo run away but the baby is to slow and the lions get a hold of it.

The lions have the baby buffalo in some water chewing and trying to kill this buffalo. But just then a crocodile gets a hold of the buffalo as well trying to pull in the little buffalo. The lions do not let up that easy so they get in a tug of war match with the crocodile. It ends up that the lions come out on top.

All of a sudden a ton of buffalo come trampling in towards the lions determined to get there baby back. These buffalo swarm the lions and trap them towards the water. One buffalo comes out of the pack and flips a lion way up in the air. That sent the message out to the other lions and it did not take long for the buffalo to get back what belonged to them.

    4. I see this video being a metaphor from back when there was slavery with blacks. I think the buffalo are the blacks, and the lions are the whites. I think the crocodile is another group of racism trying to get to the blacks. But the blacks fight together and do not give up. They have a dream and end segregation as much as they can.

  10. 1. I would want to be the water buffalo because they have a whole herd of back up an they're huge. I would rather be out in th wild so you could be free an not locked in a cage.
    2. It shows that the buffalo is the dominant animal. They have the power to fight off anyone who messes with them.
    3. The video is truly amazing. It shows that animals car for their young just like anyone else does. It shows the will power to fight for their young. They aren't afraid of any animal an they showed that.
The scene is just unreal. Its so amazing that the baby buffalo had the power to survive. Not only being brought down by a lion but also a alligator. Not one but two alligators fighting for their part of the buffalo.
Its amazing the will to survive the baby buffalo had. He could of gave up an died but he fought it off. Its like he knew they would be back to save him. Its amazing how theu brought the whole herd back for one baby. It shows how important the young are.
    4. The video could be used in life as a sign of survial. Humans have to fight to survive just like the buffalo. Also people are the lions and crocidile cause at the same time people have to survive. It could really be either one of the animals.

  11. Well I think I would want to be the lion. Not because i want to eat a Water Buffalo but because they are the predator or the dominate ones. I would hate living in a Park. I would feel trapped. This is a lesson in leadership because the Water Buffalo had to take charge and protect the calf buffalo. The Water Buffalo have no clue that there is danger lurking near of hungry lions. The lions try and wait until the weaker Buffalo starts to linger away from the main herd. As soon as possible the lion force attack trying to get an easy meal. They chase and end up dragging the calf into the water. While the lions are trying kill it, an alligator pops out and starts dragging it in to water. The lions end up winning the tug a war, pulling back on the bank. Later on the grown buffalo start getting mad and come to the pack of lion feasting on the baby calf. The big pack the buffalo's were in ended up getting close. Close enough to scare the lions off of the calf and saving its life. For the human race the buffalo would be the good people in life. The lions and crocodile would be crooks and thieves.

  12. VIA TAYLOR MOONEYHAM - 1. If you could be one of these animals (or any animal), which one would you be? Why? Would you rather be an animal living in a National Park like Kruger or in a zoo?
I would want to be a crocodile for sure! They have survived for millions of years for a reason. Id rather be in kruger for sure. I Would never wanna be in cage.
    2. How is this video a lesson in leadership? survival?
It just goes to show That it only takes one to lead the pack. You can survive as long you have the means and the drive.
    3. Using as much descriptive and sensory language as possible, how would you describe this scene/video to someone that had never seen it or couldn't see it? Your response must be no less than 3 paragraphs.
This video takes place in Kruger and is filmed by these tourist on a tour. When they were on this little tour there were a few water buffalo that strayed from the pack. When they did a voracious pack lions attacked and mauled and took down the baby in the river. While in the river the poor little baby buffalo was then snatched by a crocodile.
This crazy nonsense turned into a tug a war battle between the Croc and lions. However the pack of lions out numbered the lions and pulled the baby ashore. The baby was still alive and kicking and the danger for lions began again. A mob of Water buffalo came stampeding at the pack and the baby in a hurry.
The Mob of buffalo corned the lions next the river where the teeth filled crocs hid. They were bucking and kicking and giving the hell. Then one monstrous buffalo launched a lion a good 6 feet in the air and chased him. As the baby kept kicking the mob drew closer and overwhelmed the lions. The water buffalo some how managed to pry the baby from the lions and saved the baby! Finally the buffalo all chased off the cowardly lions!

    4. How could this video be viewed as a metaphor for the human race? Who would the water buffalo represent? the lions? the crocodile?
This could represent the social classes. The upper class would be the crocodile because he really has no predator. He is top dog. The middle class would the lions because although they aren't on the top they are still doing pretty good. and then the lower class be the buffalo because they have number. also they really have to fight for what's theirs

  13. 1) If I were to be any animal I would be the bull water buffalo because he was the obviously the strongest and biggest creature. If I had to choose between a zoo or the park I would choose the park because it's more of a natural habitat. And even though the zoo would guarantee food and safety, I would still rather be in the wild.
    2) This video is a perfect example of leadership for more than one reason. The first reason is where the lions attack the water buffalo. Its quite clear that there is a lead lion who makes the first attack. And then there is the example of the Bull later on in the video where he leads the herd into the attack against the lions in attempt to retrieve the calf. An example of survival is how the calf resisted long enough to be saved by the herd.
    3) There is a large water hole where a herd of water buffalo approach gradually. A bull, a cow and a calf run ahead, unaware that a pride of about 6 lions is basking in the sun on a bank by the waters edge. As the buffalo approach the water, the lions start stalking them and crawl slowly towards them. The buffalo family become are of the pride much too late and the pride overcomes them, attacking the calf. The force of the lions attack pushes the lead lion and calf into the water where the pride struggles to recover the calf. During this process, two alligators attempt to steal the calf from the lions but are hindered because the lions manage to drag the calf onto the beach where the lions have the advantage. The alligators retreat and the calf is left in the jaws of the lions. A few minutes late the whole herd arrives, led by the bull. Through a complicated process of charging and and ramming the herd succeeds in saving the calf from the pride. This whole ordeal takes place in the amount of about 8 minutes.
